Glucose-Lowering Studies

Grape seed extract was evaluated in rats for its effect in lowering blood glucose level. The results were published in the August 2009 issue of "Phytotherapy Research". It was found that grape seed extract decreased blood glucose levels and average blood glucose concentrations in rats after six weeks of treatment.

Effects of grape seed extract on diabetic complications

A number of  secondary complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney toxicity, nerve and eye damage, are associated with diabetes metabolism syndrome.  The diabetic complications are caused by the high levels of glucose, lipids and oxidative stress that accompany the disease. Several animal studies suggest grape seed extract decrease the risk of developing many of the secondary complications associated with diabetes.

Diabetes often causes blindness. Retinopathy, or progressive eye damage, is present to some degree in most diabetic patients that have had diabetes more than 10 years. A preliminary study was published in 2008 that grape seed extract was found to protect against the development of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic rats. The effects of grape seed extract on delaying or preventing retinopathy have not been evaluated in humans.

How could grape seed extract protect against diabetic complications?

Abnormally high blood glucose level in diabetic patients, like little shards of glass on the inside of the vein, damages the walls of veins and arteries. There has been no good way to control the chronically developing problems in the progress of diabetes. When the veins become very weak, they can eventually burst.  They can also bulge out and are more likely to leak and cause edema – the leg swelling.

The health of the veins in legs are correlated to the health of the arteries in heart. That is,  weak veins in your legs indicate a weak heart.  Weak veins and a weak heart make you more prone to having hemorrhagic strokes.

The weak veins and weak heart are not limited to diabetic patients.  There are many factors such as daily stress, environmental pollution and our diet chock full of sugar.

Grape seed extract is taken as an excellent dietary supplement for vein health support and for the purpose of optimum health condition and as antioxidant to relieve a variety of oxidative stress in our daily life.
